Kuroko no Basuke has been extremely popular with mainstream readers, particularly women. It has had many doujinshi spin-offs, largely due to the seven male leads, which means a big opportunity for male-male pairings. The frequent reference to Kuroko as being a shadow helps push the matter further. Kuroko\u2019s basketball is a shonen manga about a team of five basketball players from Teiko Middle school, known as the \u201cGeneration of Miracles,\u201d however, there\u2019s also a phantom sixth character that no one knows anything about. Each of these players has special abilities that are similar to superpowers, and all six regular players of Teiko\u2019s first-string team go on to different competing high schools.<\/p>\n
The protagonist of this manga is Kuroko Tetsuya, the phantom sixth character who went on to Seirin High, and his teammate Taiga Kagami, a rising basketball talent who\u2019s just returned from the United States.<\/p>\n

The phantom sixth man from the \u201cGeneration of Miracles.\u201d He generally has very little presence, and his special ability is to disappear at will. This proves to be an extremely useful tactic for confusing the enemy, especially in misdirection and passes. He is often referred to as being a \u201cshadow\u201d that complements other players and lets their special talents shine.<\/p>\n
Kuroko\u2019s teammate at Seirin High. He has a natural aptitude for basketball, and his height and build gives him an extra edge. Fiery and passionate, he is the exact opposite of the usually calm Kuroko. He forms an alliance with Kuroko to beat the \u201cGeneration of Miracles\u201d one by one and to bring Seirin to the top.<\/p>\n
One of the \u201cGeneration of Miracles.\u201d His special ability is to copy anyone\u2019s move and style after watching them once. As such, he proves to be a formidable foe to most regular players. A pretty boy, he also moonlights as a model. He usually appears light-hearted and cheerful, but he has extreme dedication when it comes to basketball.<\/p>\n
He is the captain of the \u201cGeneration of Miracles.\u201d His special ability is his \u201cEmperor\u2019s eyes,\u201d which allows him to predict the future moves of his opponents.<\/p>\n
One of the \u201cGeneration of Miracles\u201d with a serious temperament, almost excessively so. His fascination with \u201clucky objects of the day\u201d seems opposite to his personality, however. He is known for his shots, and usually keeps his left hand wrapped outside of matches.<\/p>\n
Childlike in nature, Atsushi has an avid fascination for sweets and junk food. He seems cold-blooded and indifferent toward basketball, even going so far as to claim that he hates passionate players.<\/p>\n
Taiga\u2019s equal when it comes to fiery temperaments. He was the ace in the \u201cGeneration of Miracles.\u201d Cocky and arrogant, he comes off as despicable to most characters in the manga, particularly with his narcissistic statement, \u201cthe only one who can beat me is me\u201d.<\/p>\n
