Equipped with the Caliber 8-3/4 Hunter, these early Bubblebacks featured a special cover over the movement, complete with printed disassembly instructions. This was designed for watchmakers who were encountering the new automatic movement for the very first time. Another unique trait was the presence of a regulator slot, something that only appeared in the very first generation.
★ 2nd Generation (1935)
Structurally similar to the 1st model, the 2nd generation marked a step forward. As Bubblebacks gained wider recognition and their improved accuracy drastically reduced the frequency of repairs, the printed manual was no longer needed. The regulator slot was also removed, giving the design a much cleaner and simpler finish.
★ 3rd Generation (1941–1943)
This version introduced the Caliber 9-3/4 Hunter, which featured a larger balance wheel and delivered a significant boost in accuracy. The movement became so reliable and precise that it remained in use all the way until production ceased, earning the Bubbleback a reputation for absolute accuracy in its era.
★ 4th Generation (1943)
At this stage in its evolution, Rolex introduced Bubbleback models officially certified by the Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC: Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres), a huge milestone that elevated the watch’s global reputation for accuracy and reliability.
Earning the title of “Chronometer” is no small feat. To qualify, each watch must undergo rigorous testing over 15 days under five different positions and three different temperatures. Only about 3% of all tested movements pass these standards, giving you an idea of just how demanding the criteria are.
Every single watch is tested individually, meaning even two identical models may have different outcomes. Those that pass are issued a unique certificate, making each certified Bubbleback an exceptionally rare treasure.
★ 5th Generation (1945)
The word “Perpetual” was engraved on the rotor for the first time, a move that made the term widely associated with Rolex’s automatic technology.
“Perpetual” refers to Rolex’s patented self-winding mechanism, first filed in 1932 and officially recognized in 1933. From here, the Bubbleback entered its golden age: dial variations expanded, more case materials were introduced, and its popularity skyrocketed.
★ 6th Generation (1946)
The final Bubbleback brought major design improvements. The rotor was redesigned with a two-step incline, and the caseback evolved into a beautifully rounded form, soft and bubble-like, giving the watch its signature silhouette.
Produced until 1955, the 6th generation offered everything from classic, understated pieces to unique and unconventional variations. It marked the elegant finale of the Bubbleback era.
